Default 3-D World Map

We have the land of Tyria. We have the land of Cantha.

What planet are they on?

Yes, I know that Chapter1 & 2 are stand alone games with separate maps, but my idea is to add a feature to bring the maps together.

My vision is to have an option to change to a 3-D World Map that shows the entire planet that Tyria and Cantha are on. When you press "M' it would bring up a map of the world and you could circle the globe to find the continent you want to visit instead of having to flip between maps the way we do today. The zoom feature would still apply so you could zoom out, press an arrow key to circle the globe or a tab key to shift to the next continent, then zoom back in to select the town you want to visit on that continent.

I think this would help with the release of upcoming chapters. Assuming that Nightfall is on the same planet!

I can see us having some serious problems by chapter 4,5,6 if the map doesn't get enhanced pretty soon.

Serious discussion and ideas are welcome. Or just /sign if you like the idea. Please keep this thread flame free.

Edit:
Additional idea

Toggle the map screen like the character screen.

On the character screen you have a face for each of your characters in a box. You click the box to display your character.

Why not have a row of boxes at the bottom of the "M" map screen to flip between maps as the maps are added?

Thanks.

Well i assume it is earth...

The 3-d idea is pretty cool, but really isn't needed, because we have imaginery boats.

Why do you assume earth? I don't see any prehistoric fossils of Charr at the local museums.

I suppose using the boat to get to lions arch for the first time is okay, but after that it just feels like extra work.

If I have most places opened up on multiple maps, then it's a hassle to have to spawn in lions arch, then open the map again to travel to some other location in tyria (like the desert).

Once we have a town or mission zone open in Tyria we dont have to take a boat or other mean of transportation from town to town. We just open our maps and click on the town we want to get there instantly. So, it makes perfect sense to me that we should be able to do the same thing between each stand alone game if we have the maps opened up for each game.

example:

I'm in Cantha, but I want to travel to Droknars Forge (which I already have open on the Tyrian map). Why should I have to take a boat and go to Lions Arch first? Simple press "M" to open your "World Map", zoom out or tab over to the continent of Tyria, and press on the town of Droknars Forge.

This does 2 things.

1.) saves time
2.) brings the stand alone games closer together for a feeling of having 1 overall game.

Why is boat travel necessary every single time? It's not consistent with the rest of the game. I only have to take a boat 1 time to leave the jungle and get to the desert in Chapter 1, after that I just click on the town that I want. Consistency is the key to success imo.

I like the idea, but I dont think itd be an easy task. Cantha and Tyria are both on the same world, which I believe is also called Tyria (Both continent and world have the same name), and as cool as a world map would be, it would seriously limit the amount of new areas they could implement with future chapters, unless the world grows after each new continent, which doesnt usually happen to a planet..
I agree its a hassle to go from Lions Arch or KC, but its not going to make me quit the game anytime soon.
I like the idea, but I dont think itll fly.

I don't see the use of having the map 3D but having both continents appear on one map would be useful.

Because if it's a 3-d circular globe you can fit more stuff on it than a regular flat map and it adds to the realism of the land of Tyria and Cantha and what ever new lands come next......

I don't think a flat map would be able to hold all of the content as upcoming chapters are released.

On a 3-d world map you can fit as much as you want and still have room to add more in the future.

Another possible idea would be to toggle the map screen like the character screen. On the character screen you have a face for each of your characters in a box. You click the box to display your character.

Why not have a row of boxes at the bottom of the "M" map screen to flip between maps as the maps are added.

Does anyone like this idea better? I actually think this would be easier for Anet to do since it's already an available feature on the character screen.

This planet has lots of volcanic and geological activity. New continents, replete with full cultures, architecture, history, etc, seem to spring up every six months.

The parts of the world map that you havent unlocked would be "clouded over" like the maps today.

I think it's a good idea, a GW verion of google earth, which I assume u got the idea from =P. I can only see it solving more problems than any which I can't think of it causing (work it out, it makes sense lol).
